Profile of Chairman, General (Dr.) Yakubu Gowon, GCFR
His Excellency, General (Dr.) Yakubu Gowon, GCFR is a visionary leader and former Head of State who governed Nigeria between August 1st 1966 and July 29th, 1975.
During the civil war, the General demonstrated a high sense of patriotism and responsibility which ensured the corporate existence of Nigeria against all odds. He immediately pursued a programme of national rebirth, reconciliation, reconstruction to heal the wounds and restore Nigeria’s lost glory.
Since his retirement from public life, he has continued to serve Nigeria and the African continent with unparallel dedication and selflessness. General Gowon is a member of the Africa Forum, an informal network of former African Heads of State and Governments designed to support the implementation of the broad objectives of the African Union (AU).
In 1992, General Gowon founded his own organisation, the Yakubu Gowon Centre for National Unity and International Cooperation which is working on issues of good governance in Nigeria as well as the control of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, guinea worm and malaria. Its main objective is to ensure a strong and united Nigeria free of diseases and poverty. It is to General Gowon's credit today that Nigeria is no longer considered the world’s most guinea worm-infested country as he teamed up with his US counterpart, President Jimmy Carter to fight the scourge. His achievement in the eradication of guinea worm in Nigeria influenced his appointment as a Viral Hepatitis Ambassador. In the ‘90s, he formed a non-denominational religious group NIGERIA PRAYS.
The amiable General is happily married to Victoria Gowon and their union is blessed with children.
